We recently helped a Nanaimo Small Business customer with some IT challenges related to a recently purchased DECO system from TP-Link.
The DECO system is a great “whole house” solution for a wired backhaul “mesh” Wifi network that will not require the extensive cabling a full distributed system containing wall and ceiling-mounted business APs.
The setup is straightforward, and the dashboard includes all the expected features as well as extended items like parental controls.

Best of all, the app is intuitive – to a point.

This customer had spent days troubleshooting a slow-speeds challenge – with both wired and wireless connections limited to around 6Mbit/s. This included both wireless and WIRED connections. This hinted at some kind of rate limiting policy, or an issue with badly terminated network connections (can sometimes be stepped down to 10Mbit or 100Mbit if certain pairs are not making contact).
The speeds directly to the modem were good, utilizing a Rogers Cable modem configured for 1Gig down.
Once on site, we brought along a “known good” pre-configured cloud AP on the Omada network and confirmed 10Mbit connections directly to the DECO device designated as the gateway.
We confirmed that the cable between the modem and the gateway was properly connected with all 4 pairs and that the connection was established at Gigabit, full duplex.
We had the Business Owner log into their DECO app and dashboard and confirmed all the basics. We were unable to find a rate-limiting policy on the wifi SSID or wired connections.
The setting we were looking for was called “QOS” and does not show as a top-level option from the dashboard. Sure enough, the DECO device was set with a global QOS policy of 10Mbit/s up and down. We removed that limitation and applied the settings.
The customer was back to full speeds!
